Planning Your Visit

We’re here to make your experience as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Here, you’ll find helpful tips to ensure you’re fully prepared for your visit and that we can provide the best care for your child.

Tips ahead of the visit:

  • 1. Bring comfort items: If your child is young, consider bringing a snack, a favorite book, or a preferred toy to help them feel comfortable and engaged during the evaluation. Familiar items can make the experience less intimidating.

    2. Arrive a little early: Arriving a bit early allows your child to settle in and adjust to the new environment before the evaluation begins.

    3. Keep it relaxed: Try to approach the evaluation with a calm and positive attitude. Your child will be more likely to feel at ease if they sense you are relaxed and supportive.

  • 1. Bring comfort items: If your child is young or may get hungry during the evaluation, consider bringing a drink and a few snacks of their choice. This will help keep them comfortable and engaged throughout the session.

    2. Arrive a little early: Arriving a few minutes early will allow your child time to settle into the environment and adjust before the evaluation begins. It can also help reduce any anxiety about the visit.

    3. Prepare to discuss concerns: Be ready to share any concerns you have about your child’s oral and facial muscle function, such as difficulty chewing, swallowing, or other oral habits like thumb-sucking. Any relevant information will help guide the evaluation.

    4. Be ready for some activities: During the evaluation, there will likely be a variety of tasks and activities to assess your child’s mouth and facial muscles. These may include simple exercises, such as tongue movements or breathing exercises, so make sure your child is comfortable and willing to participate.

    5. Talk about the visit: It may help to explain to your child in simple terms what to expect. Let them know that the therapist will be checking how their mouth and face work together to help them eat, talk, and breathe, and that they will be asked to do some fun exercises.

    6. Inform us of any allergies: It’s crucial to let us know about any allergies your child may have, including food, environmental, or material sensitivities. This information helps us create a safe and comfortable evaluation experience for your child.

  • 1. Gather relevant records: To help us understand your child’s needs, please provide any pertinent reports or documents, such as:

IEPs (Individualized Education Plans), if applicable.

Neuropsychologist reports or any developmental assessments.

Previous speech/language reports from other professionals.

    • Any other medical records or documentation that could be relevant to your child’s speech and language development.

    2. Share concerns and goals: When scheduling the initial consultation, be sure to share any specific concerns or goals you have regarding your child’s communication skills. This will allow us to tailor the therapy plan to meet your child’s needs effectively.

    3. Check with your child’s school: If your child is attending school, ask the school to provide you with any relevant reports related to speech or language services, as they may have conducted assessments or provided services in the past.

    4. Review therapy history: If your child has received any speech therapy previously, please provide records of that treatment, including progress reports and any strategies that worked or didn’t work. This information is essential in understanding your child’s progress and needs.

    5. Prepare for a detailed discussion: Be prepared to discuss your child’s developmental history, any medical conditions, and specific communication challenges. The more information you can provide, the better we can customize the therapy plan.

By gathering and providing these records ahead of time, we can ensure a smooth and efficient start to your child’s speech therapy journey!
